Explosive Morning Glory Fruit Crumble

This meal is like summer in a bowl. Sweet and sour, fresh and colourful. And loaded with finer which is pretty good for your health. What is especially cool about this meal is the variety options. It really is about what kind of fresh fruits you actually have on hand. I like apples, pears, blueberries and oranges. These are all colourful, sweet and juicy.


  • 1/2 cup of different types of fruits (sliced apple, pear, a handful of blueberries, orange)
  • 5-6 raw macadamia nuts or any kind of nuts you have on hand
  • Steel-cut rolled oats or home-made granola (optional)
  • Ground cinnamon

Prep Instructions

1. Mix sliced fruits and sauté for 10-15 minutes on the stove on medium temperature.

2. While sauteing add a bit of water to make the mixture juicier.

3. Add rolled oats or crumbles of home-made granola.

4. Sprinkle with cinnamon and add the nuts.

5. Cook for 5 minutes longer for the oats to absorb some of the fruity sauce.

6. Rest it for a couple of minutes before serving.

7. You can add some low-fat yogurt on top and voila.

This meal makes a perfect breakfast. It is rich in vitamins, fibre and obviously sugar. And to sugar disregarding where it comes from our body responds pretty much the same way.

But make no mistake thinking that because the sugar composition is the same in fruit and cake, they’re interchangeable. Seriously, that is not true.

Firstly fruit offers good stuff like vitamins, antioxidants and water, while candy bar and desserts are basically nutritionally void.

Secondly fruit also tends to have less sugar by volume. For example half a cup of strawberries has 3.5 grams of sugar. And half a cup of strawberry ice cream: 15 grams.

Thirdly, whole fruit has a lot of fiber, which actually slows down your body’s digestion of glucose, so you don’t get the crazy insulin spikes (and subsequent crash) that cookies and candy bars cause. It also means your body has more time to use up glucose as fuel before storing it — as fat. Even dried fruit, a notoriously sugary treat, has all the fiber and nutrients of its plump forbear. But do watch out for dried fruits with added sugar (check the nutrition label), and don’t eat a ton just because they’re smaller. Imagine how many pieces are in a handful of raisins compared with a handful of grapes. You got the point, right? It is like drinking a glass of juice and eating whole orange. I bet you could not eat the equivalent of an orange from a glass of orange juice.

Remember this: sugar itself is not toxic. But getting too much of it from cookies and cake definitely is.
