Lean Ground Beef (or Chicken) Ragu

Lean Ground Beef (or Chicken) Ragu

I love this Italian inspired dish. It is full of complete protein on the bed of great tasting whole-wheat pasta. It takes a bit of time to cook but once you put all ingredients into the pan, it cooks itself. Give it a try and use either lean beef or ground chicken or turkey breast for the sauce.

  • 400 grams of ground lean beef (you might use ground chicken or turkey breast)
  • 2 cans of tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup of tomato paste
  • Fresh thyme
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Whole-wheat pasta

Prep Instructions

1. Cook whole-wheat pasta in boiling water for 15-20 minutes. Check it during cooking not to overcooked it. When al dente, drain the water, cool it in cold fresh water and set aside.

2. Heat the olive oil in a pan and cook the meat until slightly brown for around 5 minutes.

3. Add chopped fresh thyme, a pinch of salt and pepper and mix well in the pan.

4. Pour in the tomatoes and the tomato paste. Mix well.

5. Cover the lid and cook on low heat for 3- min.

Nutrition Facts & Tips

For the sauce I use the leaner cuts of the meat to control the calorie intake. What I focus on instead is creating a rich and thick tomato sauce which I think in this dish is the real game changer. And do not skip the seasoning. You will not miss the fattier meats believe me.

I also use whole-wheat pasta. It is a better version as it has nutritional value instead of just caloric value which is the case when using the classic pasta.
