Available year round, smoked mackerel is one of the least expensive and most popular of all smoked fish. It requires very little preparation, except maybe checking it for bones. The skin will peel away relatively easily and the flesh can be mashed or eaten as is perfect for using in salads as rich source of healthy fat and protein. Flavours such as hot horseradish and low-fat dairy such as fromage or cottage cheese and lemon all work well with this fish as they cut through its deep richness.
